Guess what? My garden planning adventure has officially begun! My raised bed area is a whopping 112 square feet. I’ve got three different sized raised beds. Four are 3×5, eight are 2×6, and two are 1×3. Every year, I eagerly watch my garden grow. Taking notes on the sun patterns and what plants thrive in each spot. I also jot down what food I want to add, experiment with, or say goodbye to.
Now, here’s the cool part: my garden is a square foot garden or vertical gardening. I’ll dive deeper into that in my next post. In simple terms, every single square foot, all 112 of them, will have at least one plant. In four of my 2×6 raised beds, I only grow garlic and potatoes, so those are off the table for now. They’re absolute pros at their spot, so I’m not messing with them.

The first thing I do is make a list of all the plants I want to grow and input their specific details into my Planter app. This app is a treasure trove of information! I can see which plants are best friends (green dots) and which ones don’t get along (red dots). In my screenshot, you can see I have some green dots, but the best part is that there are no red dots! Planter also lets me know how many of each type of plant I can fit in a square foot. I don’t always follow their advice, but it gives me a solid starting point.

Before I start planting, I make a grid system inside each raised bed. The first year, I measured and marked each side of the beds in one-foot increments. Now, every year, I use thumb tacks in those markings. I then tie yarn or whatever string I can find to create a one-foot grid in each box.

Now, when I’m ready to plant the entire area. I take my iPad out into the garden with my Planter plan and put everything in its place.

By the way, check out my YouTube video. I show you how I set up the whole grid system for planting. It’s a fun and informative watch!
